Philosopher Daniel Dennett was one of the stars of the Global Atheist Convention in Melbourne and gave a brilliant and whimsical talk on defining the atheist. He is the uber-philospher of the mind and a great provocateur, though he was speaking to 4000 non believers at this convention. He talks specifically about The Clergy Project in the middle of his talk at 19 min 15 sec. For more info: see ...

Trees simply grow to the sun without questioning the heat from the light. The sun just IS. And trees just grow. For some reason hominids CRAVE to fathom, we demand answers to ‘the mystery.’ We think n talk far too much. Humans make more noise than is necessary. We all just need to stop talking. Peace. ✌️

we ought to point out that atheists are in fact allies, atheists just want christians to stop ranting about god but the other religions want to stop their god altogether, they might dislike the fact secularism doesn't favour christianity, but it also doesn't favour islam or hindu either. with islam the fastest growing religion and christianity the fastest dying out - they need all the help they can get.

Dennett doesn't really define atheism vs. theism, explicitly, in terms of mutually exclusive defining features. I might be a "deist" and have big doubts about (or deny) the various scriptures. So I may believe God exists, in some sense (e.g., non-sentiently), but He strictly (or just fortuitously) wants us to figure out something "on our own", which I believe is the atheist position, minus the God. While the atheism position seems more parsimonious to "deism", it really doesn't explain the whole "why there is something rather than nothing" thingee. BTW, miss Dennett a lot.

Of all the public talks that Dan gave over the years, especially during the height of the New Atheist movement - the early 2010s, pre-Trump - this one stands out among the rest as one of, if not the best. Another notable appearance, not a talk but an interview, was one he did with BBC HardTalk hosted by Stephen Sackur during that time. The stream of wisdom that Dan gave to some of the big questions asked by Sackur were some of his best ever in my opinion. The brief moment in our cultural where we had talk after talk, presentations and conferences (who, here, remembers The Science Network's Beyond Belief series, for example?) where it seemed like they would go on forever; that was a special time in our culture that brought science, skeptical inquiry, rational, non-religious rigor front and center. The very definition of a zeitgeist in the culture during that brief time. We now have most public intellectuals on the podcast circuits. And while that is fine. It pales in comparison to the height of the New Atheist movement. It is so sorely missed. There's one other notable appearance that I have rewatched many times and it is Dan's participation in Dutch documentarian and writer, Wim Kayzer's, 'A Glorious Accident' - Een schitterend ongeluk in Dutch - from 1993. A tour de force if there ever was one, where Dan, Oliver Sacks, Stephen Jay Gould, Freeman Dyson, Stephen Toulmin (and unfortunately Rupert Sheldrake) were interviewed by Kayzer individually, and then a 'coming together' round-table discussion hosted by Kayzer as the final culmination. Dan writes about the whole experience in his final book, 'I've Been Thinking' in 2023. For me: Dan Dennett, Oliver Sacks, Carl Sagan, and Christopher Hitchens remain at the top for me personally as intellectual heroes from recent history. It is not to put them on any sort of pedestal (Hitchens' line about 'nobody is infallible', etc.) But Dan had an indelible mark during the formative years of early adulthood, and he remains an intellectual and cultural hero. A hefty loss for us all with his passing.

I use to think that nobody knew anything and nobody had the answers pertaining to questions like is there a God, what happens when we die .etc. etc. One night my Soul cried out to something bigger, this thing i /others call God( I was homeless in my car), in frustration and anger at It/God... Like if you're real/there why didn't you show up when i called to you before... Then layer that night during sleep i had the most peaceful dream and feeling I'd ever had.. shortly thereafter things started happening in my life, and experiences also.. i was guided to learn about things unseen, i read stories about a woman who lost a child and was so sad and depressed she agreed to participate in a scientific experiment to be artificially inseminated with the sperm of a chimpanzee. The first chimp they set up died. Then they got another one, it died, then another set up. It died. All young and healthy ('Zoobiquity).. I was gudided to read about someone cutting down a tree who heard a voice and then, stayed with the tree in protest for 300 and something days in protest to not cut down the trees (U-turn). I was guided to read about Angels, healing and spirituality eventually. In more recent years ive been guided to learn and read more about Jesus. I love learning about Him and his teachings, love, and highest wisdom, our elder brother, and truly loving friend. A couple years ago i was healed from scoliosis, and have seen and heard about Many miracles. I'd read Daniel Dennets book Darwin's dangerous idea (and many on biology, Darwin etc). This was many years ago, and although i thought it was true at the time, agnosticism I know for Certain that it is not now. I have learned so much. Things such as, love forgiveness, compassion, joy being of service..being true to our selves while honoring others.. that we came from God, but forgot. And an incredible destiny awaits us. i pray, meditate, talk to God, try to do the right thing, and try to do unto others as i would have them do unto me, and to take care if myself first so i can give from a full place. Love, laugh, forgive, live in joy, be yourself, you are unique and beautiful beyond comprehension

24:50 Dennett is sad over a priest getting fired from his job because he was an atheist. This is how the corrupt evil people like Dennett think. It never occurred to Dennett that a priest that doesn’t believe in God should lose his job because he’s not fulfilling the job requirements: namely the requirement of belief in God. The arrogance of atheists is astounding.

The process from a believer to a non-believer takes a while. For some it can be years. For me it began with the notion that in my heart I didn't believe in the resurrection story. It helped that I was a member of a very liberal denomination, but still to reject one of the fundamental cornerstone of christianity was a revelation to me. My growing interest in science - especially astrophysics - pushed the boundary of my interest in philosophy and ethics, and i came to a realization that morals do not need god, and that god cannot be substantiated by any evidence outside the religious texts. Atheists don't believe there is no god. We have no faith that god exists, and the key word is "faith". We are open to the existence of god as science is open to any possibility provided they are backed up by verifiable evidence that can be tested by others.

You can't really say that Atheism is an ideology. It's like saying non-stamp collecting is a hobby. Theists and atheists have committed all kinds of atrocities and genocides. It's human nature; we're close relatives of chimpanzees you know, a troubling thought, but it is what it is. That's a bizarre god thing you believe in btw, so petty and spiteful that it likes to torment the tiny little lesser beings that it created. It's imaginary of course, but if it existed, it could just communicate directly with atheists. It must be hiding, yeah that's the ticket! It's sneaky!
